These walruses from 1930s were used by RAAF as reconnaissance aircraft, able to take off from a warship. This piece had a fierce history: in October 1947, it was assigned to RAAF's Antarctic Flight, painted in yellow and deployed at the first postwar Australian expedition to the Antarctic region. However, it flew only once and during a storm in December of that year at Heard Island was completely destroyed. Only in 1980 was the aircraft recovered and brought back to Australia. Restauration lasted ten years, and since 2002 it is exhibited here.
